Episode 5x12 - Taking This One to the GrAve
Clues in this Episode that Aria is A
The episode begins with the girls comforting each other outside of Mona's house after the apparent murder of Mona. Aria says, just in case we were thinking Mona might still be alive, that "nobody could have survived that" referring to the amount of blood in the house.
The girls (Hanna and Emily) then receive a text that says "It's all your fault. -A" If you look closely at Aria when the girls receive the text, she is looking off in the distance and has her phone in a position that looks like she might have sent that text!
Several Days Earlier...
We see that in the days before Mona's death, the liars had befriended her and she was working with them to investigate at Radley. The timing of this is suspicious. Aria Mona had just had the heart to heart last episode in the movie theater bathroom where Mona basically told Aria that she knew all about New York including what happened to Shana. Now suddenly Aria has the liars over at Mona's house to make nice with her and ask her to help them investigate Alisone and Radley. When Mona asks why they need her help, all of the girls look to Aria and she says "because you're Mona". By the way the other girls looked to Aria, it is clear that it was Aria's idea to embrace Mona not theirs. What is that little PLL saying, keep your enemies close...
Mona appears to be thrilled that the girls want her help but right after the girls leave her house, we see her go up to her room and make a phone call. To the unknown caller she says, "Send out a Code A. She's plotting something big." Who is the She that Mona is referring to in this phone call. It seems like it is Aria that she is referring to. Aria is the one that threatened her last night in the movie theater, and now today wants to be friends and needs her help?? Mona is a smart girl and she is scared that Aria is up to something.
When Aria is in Radley trying to create a distraction to cover for Spencer and Mona entering the records room, she spills red paint all over the floor. When Detective Holbrook approaches, the scene looks like Aria cleaning up blood. As Holbrook approaches, he says to Aria, "You've certainly made a mess of things."
We see that as a hint toward Aria being involved in more than trying to figure out who A is. The paint spill that looks like blood spatter foreshadows the bloody crime scene of Mona's murder later in the episode and hints that Aria is connected and a person of interest to the police. In addition, Aria says to the nurse about the spill, "its all my fault", later after Mona's crime scene is discovered the girls get a text from A "Its all your fault." This is not the first time that A sends a message using the same language that Aria had previously used.
Next Detective Holbrook says to Aria: "Of course, I'm just curious, when did it all start?"
Aria has a hallucination at this point and imagines him saying. "when did it all start - the lies, the cover-ups, the murders". What he is really asking is when Aria started volunteering at Radley. He also asks her if she has an interest in the mental health profession. These are clues toward Aria b/c it is not the first time that she has had hallucinations or that it has been hinted that Aria might have a psychological disorder.
Mona admited to Aria last episode that she knows some things about New York and she suspects others (Shana's murder). What is that famous PLL line - "two can keep a secret is one of them is dead"!!?? It was alarming to Aria that Mona knew about her killing Shana.
At the beginning of the episode, Aria says "there's too much blood in there, nobody could have lived through that." There are some theories out there on twitter that Mona is not really dead. The might be correct. Remember a few episodes back when she fainted in the school musical auditions? Well Mona had a band-aide on her arm that is in the same spot you would draw blood from. Maybe she was drawing her blood and storing it up to fake her death?? If this is true, it would support the theories that Aria and Mona have been working together. There have been many mysterious scenes between Mona and Aria over the the past 5 seasons so it is totally plausible. Also in the opening scenes of this episode when the girls show up at Mona's house to ask for her help, she asks them why they came to her. The other girls all look at Aria who says: "because your Mona". It was obvious to us in that scene that it was Aria's idea to get Mona involved in helping them. Aria reached out to Mona after Mona told her she knew about New York, and brought her in to the liars' circle to gain her trust and keep the NY secret.
We see at the end of the episode Mona's seemingly dead body being placed in the trunk of a dark blue sedan. The car is very similar in color and style to the car that Aria drives. The photo to the left shows some comparisons of Aria's car and the car with Mona's body. both photos show the license plates missing.
