PLL Episode 1x04 - Can You Hear Me Now?
Clues from this Episode that Aria is A
TITLE - The episode title, Can You Hear Me Now? relates to Aria. She has been trying to get the message across to Meredith to leave her father alone, and she is trying to find a way to tell her mother about byron's affair. Aria has struggled with getting herself heard.
TYPEWRITER - At Ezra's, Aria notices the typewriter and we see it on the screen. The camera shows her trying the keys to see if they work, and of course they do. Coincidentally, Ella receives a letter from A informing her about the affair between Byron and Meredith, and that Aria has known about it and hidden it from her mother. Of course, Aria rushes home to "tell" her mother about the affair and arrives just after Ella has received the letter from A. A actually helped Aria in this situation by telling her mom for her but allowing her to be there at the right time to discuss the situation. How convenient for Aria that A is so helpful to her. Seriously though, this sequence is a definite clue that Aria is A.

The next day when Aria goes back to Ezra's house, she tells him about her dad cheating on her mom. She says to him "All I can do now is tell the truth." We know that Ezra has a type writer at his apartment that Aria has easy access to. Look at the piles of papers next to her. it looks like one of the pieces has writing on it. Do you think she typed the letter to send to her mom with Ezra's type writer?

We all know that Ezra has a typewriter and -A likes to use typewriters when she gives notes to the girls. Later we find out that Ezra is writing a book about ALi's disappearance so he obviously isn't -A because -A tried to kill him. We know that Aria has access to Ezra's apartment because she knows where he hides the key so she could easily go in and type her -A messages without him even knowing. In this episode Aria goes to Ezra's apartment, she starts playing with his typewriter. She immediately walks over to it like she already knew it was there. During these episodes, Aria has been feeling guilty about not telling her mom that her dad cheated on her with Meredith. She wants to tell her mom but is torn between telling her mom and living with the consequences. The next day, her mom gets a letter typed on a typewriter from A. The only two people that knew about the incident with her dad and Meredith was Alison and Aria. I don't think Alison had access to a typewriter while she was hiding so Aria must have typed it to her mom and then regretted it after she saw her moms reaction. Aria did say to Ezra "All I can do now is tell the truth". |
When at Ezra Apartment eating leftovers, Aria tells Ezra that when it comes to her family, she is a "fixer". She says she is the one always planning and negotiating and trying to keep them all together and solid. She is afraid things will change. Aria heads home just as her mom is reading the letter from A and says "there's something I have to tell you". How convenient that Aria knew when Ella would be receiving the letter from A. The letter was actually a relief for Aria and broke the ice for her to talk to her mother about the situation. A actually did Aria a favor here and Aria knew the perfect time to be home when her mom would receive A's note.
At Ezra's, Aria tells him about her Aunt Ruth, who does not seem mentally stable and spends her time talking to her dead, stuffed cat. Why is this mentioned? In the series we will see many clues that mental illness runs in Aria's family, and that she herself could have mental health issues.

CLOTHING - Aria is seen wearing two different butterfly dresses this episode. Butterflies are symbolic of transformation (like in the transformation from innocence like in To Kill a Mockingbird. Butterflies are also the official symbol for mental health awareness. Aria is also wearing a necklace with a bone on it.

TEXTS - Spencer suggests that the girls block all unknown texts, emails, messages and calls in an attempt to ignore A. A finds more creative ways to send messages like the broken pot letting spencer know that A is aware of her involvement with Wren, and the song dedication on the radio to Hanna rubbing in that her Dad has replaced her with his new stepdaughter. A then leaves the written message for all the girls on spencer's mirror. Written in lipstick it says, "It won't be that easy bitches -A". The handwriting in this A message looks alot like Aria's hand writing. Take a look at the some samples of Aria handwriting from future episodes (see photo below).
