PLL Episode 5x14 - Through A Glass, Darkly
Clues in this Episode that Aria is A
EPISODE TITLE This is a big episode for Aria clues! One of the first is in the new broken glass PLL opening. The new opener also relates to the title of this episode, Through A Glass, Darkly. This is the phrase that Mrs. Grunwald used to explain to Hanna how she is able to see things. Like things are not always clear and the answers are hidden in the dark, broken shadows. Does this point to a clue in the season opener? We think So. Take a look at the hidden clue in the opener - Aria is actually named as A right there!

ANONYMOUS - Aria randomly shows up at Caleb's new apartment and starts asking Caleb about what he is doing with Mona's laptop and what progress he has made. Basically Caleb has been working on he laptop for 3 monhs with no luck breaking her code.
Caleb is wondering what Aria is really doing here and asks her if she is trying out for Anonymous or something? Anonymous is the name of a famous hacker group but it is also a direct clue to A who is also Anonymous. In a previous episode Aria was covering for A when Ashley talked about calling the police that she as A, "I'm A, A for Aria, A for Anonymous." Aria tells Caleb she needs to find out if A is messing with her college applications. It actually turned out that Aria has burned some bridges and that is the reason she didn't get in to at least one the colleges she applied to. Aria actually leaves with Mona's laptop at the end of the visit which is surprising that Caleb would just hand it over to her when he has been working on it for 3 months and had no plans to stop. And why would he give it to Aria who has now had only 1 lesson in computer hacking? So it seems that Aria's main reason for stopping by Caleb's is to take the laptop. |
MIKE is acting strangely and Ezra and Aria are not sure if its because of grief over Mona, or something else. The are both tentative around him like walking on eggshells not sure what to say. Mike is at the brew working with Ezra building things. Ezra tries to talk to Mike and says that he isn't acting like someone who grieving his girlfriend and is he sure that he believes Mona is actually dead. This is a very unusual questiion for Ezra to ask. Does he too think that Mona could actually be alive? Is he nervous that if she is alive that he nor Aria know what's going on? Mike also seems to be avoiding Aria since the funeral and has been acting suspicious of her. Mike and Ezra finish up and Ezra leaves. Mike sends Aria a text asking her if she can pick him up. Aria says sure, and she'll be there in 10 minutes. When Aria arrives 10 minutes later the place is dark. Aria arrives with Mona's laptop in hand that she just took from Caleb who had been working on it for the past three months. Aria tries to call Mike and sees a dark hooded person with his phone who grabs her and traps her by stapling her with plastic to the wall. Before Aria can free herself the figure takes off with Mona's laptop. This hooded figure had to be Mike. He doesn't trust Aria and knows she hated Mona. He would also want to get ahold of her laptop and probably has the pass code to get in that Caleb has been trying to figure out for the past three months. We also think that Aria suspects it was Mike since she doesn't want to tell Ezra about the incident, and when she brings Mike's phone home, he takes it and neither of them discuss at all how/why Aria would have it and why Mike wasn't there when Aria went to pick him up. |
Another possible theory is that Mike is one of Aria's (A's) assistants and is just angry with her because the Mona thing does not appear to have gone as planned. The person who took the laptop was able to crack Mona's code so must have had inside information to be able to get in. Mike could be the one with the inside information needed from Mona to access the laptop. Either way, this situation benefits Aria in that Caleb and the other girls will not have access to the information on Mona's laptop which is probably pretty incriminating against Aria.
LITERARY CLUE - In this episode, Aria stops in at the brew which Ezra now owns and she picks up a book. The camera focuses on the book indicating that it could mean something. The book Aria takes is called the “Double Fudge Brownie Murder” by Joanne Fluke. The book is an interesting choice and centers around the main character Hannah who has been framed for murder and is trying to find out who has framed her. Coincidentally, in the book a writer is the one who planned and framed Hannah for the murder.
This is exactly the same scenario that is playing out in right now in season 5. Hanna is investigating and working on her own to prevent A from framing her for Mona's murder. It is also evident that Aria is aware of what Hanna is doing and not happy about it. |
TELL ME ABOUT HER - After Aria killed Shana she visited Jenna and somehow wanted to make some gesture to redeem herself for killing Shana and causing Jenna pain. In episode 5x5, she invites Jenna into her house saying, "I didn't know Shana well, if you wanted to tell me about her?" Fast Forward to 5x15 and Mona is now dead. Aria has been uncomforatlbe around Mike since the murder and they have been avoiding each other for the most part. When Mike starts to behave like he is suspicious of Aria, she tries to talk to him to make ammends and see how he is doing. Ironically, Aria wants Mike to tell her about Mona, just like she wanted Jenna to tell her about Shana after she killed her. She says to Mike, "Do you think you can tell me about her? the real Mona?". This could be implying that Aria killed Mona too, or had something to do with Mona''s death (or alleged death). Or it could just imply guilt by repeating the same language and scene. Either way this is incriminating evidence against Aria. |
At the end of the episode, Ali is arrested for Mona's murder as the girls look on. In this scene Aria is wearing both a Red Coat and a bug shirt. The meaning of the Red Coat is obvious, and isn't it interesting that Aria is wearing a shirt with bugs on it when earlier in the episode Mrs. Grunwald was telling Hanna that Mona was in a cold, dark place with bugs and insects all around.
Aria was also seen wearing a sweater with a camera on it during this episode. We all know that A loves to take photos and record things, just another clue pointing to Aria. |
